Review:

Picture Painting Puzzle 1000! is a Picross Puzzle game released in 2018 whose main selling point is right there in the title – the game contains 1000 puzzles. As for the rest, please read on.

The presentation here is a bit mixed. On the one hand, I love how clearly-presented the puzzles here are, and there’s even an option to zoom in if you need to. Out of all the Picross games I’ve played, this is probably the one where it’s easiest to read the screen. In addition, the menus look nice, and there’s a little animation of curtains opening and closing as a transition between menus that’s… well, interesting at least. Unfortunately, the sound in this game is horrible, with stock “tring” noises when you select menu options and some atrociously bad music. If you play this game, you will want to play it on mute. Sadly, there are no display or audio options either (aside from adjusting sound or music on or off).

For the game itself, it does a good job providing multiple options to mark cels, and the touchscreen controls work pretty well too. However, I have to fault this game for having no way to check puzzles or notify players of mistakes – either you complete a puzzle successfully, or you realize that you messed up at some point along the way and must try to retrace your steps, or perhaps just restart the whole puzzle.

Here’s the thing though… even though Picture Painting Puzzle 1000! is missing an absolutely vital feature for the genre, it still may be worth a look, especially for Picross veterans – 1000 puzzles for under $6 is a pretty good deal, and the visual presentation and controls are both superb, even if the audio is horrendous and the game lacks a way to check mistakes. As long as you can accept its flaws, the positives here will make it worth your while.

tl;dr – Picture Painting Puzzle 1000! is a Picross Puzzle game that has, yes, 1000 puzzles. Beyond that, it has a nice, clear visual presentation and good controls… it’s just a shame the game lacks any way to check for mistakes, and the audio is atrocious. Still, if you can tolerate those flaws, there’s a lot of value in this package for picross fans.
