Review:

Memory Lane is a Card game similar to Concentration and Memory Match, the classic “flip over pairs of cards to make a match” game. This particular release came out on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2020.

This game makes use of some decent artwork and relaxing music in a way that looks nice and works well for the game… albeit with a major caveat I’ll get to in a moment. Suffice it to say, it’s suitable for the sort of game this is, even if it’s not impressive in any way.

Now, to explain the caveat… this game has some pretty major problems. Namely, this game only works in handheld mode using the touchscreen… but only seems to display properly in docked mode. In handheld mode, cards and buttons are so tiny that they become difficult to see on the Nintendo Switch’s screen. This is such a basic facet of the game that it’s really mind-boggling that no one noticed it before it was released.

It gets worse. There doesn’t seem to be any menu screen or pause screen as far as I can tell, no way to change the number of cards, and after given the initial option to select a set of cards, there appears to be no way to change it without exiting the game and restarting.

Memory Match is such a simple concept, such an easy formula to replicate, it’s really surprising that anyone could get it so wrong. It technically works, but it’s unplayable in docked mode, and difficult to see in handheld mode, and lacks basic features you’d associate with pretty much any normal videogame. Do not buy this game.

tl;dr – Memory Lane is a Card game of the “match two cards” variety. Despite being an old formula, this game manages to mess it up in multiple ways, first by making it unplayable in docked mode, then hard to see in handheld mode, and then completely dropping the ball in its in-game menus. As a result, this game completely fails to achieve even the very low goal it aims for.
