Review:

Mercury Race a Futuristic Racing Game that combines normal racing elements with target-shooting elements that require you to take care of both as you speed along, taking out obstacles with a gun before you drive through an area.

It’s an interesting concept, but the way it’s implemented here leaves something to be desired. It feels strange using the right stick to aim while using the left stick to drive, and it never stopped feeling awkward. On top of that, the aim assist is so loose that it seems all you need to do is waggle the stick in the right direction and you’ll get what you need. Very strange.

Also strange is how sparse this game is for a racing game. Tracks are empty aside from yourself and occasional obstacle enemies you need to blast – you’re not racing anyone other than yourself, save for when you play in the 2-player split-screen mode. It makes the entire experience feel unfinished. Surprisingly, the game’s visuals aren’t bad though, giving off a very Tron-esque vibe. The game is a bit sparse, but it’s not unpleasant to look at.

However, in the end, Mercury Race just feels half-baked. It has an interesting concept, and with more work, it could have been something interesting – tweak the aiming controls some more, add in opponent racers, put more features in, and this could have been an interesting racing game. As it is, it just feels unfinished.

tl;dr – Mercury Race is a futuristic racing game where players must aim and shoot at obstacles in the way as they race. It’s not without its bad qualities, but in far too many ways the game just feels unfinished.
