Milli & Greg is a challenging Platformer released on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2021. This game has players taking the role of a young girl trying to get to her cat in various single-screen levels.
The presentation here is absolutely adorable, making use of 2D pixel art visuals with really nice character designs, and a cute story about a girl tasked with bringing home her errant cat. However, what really sells this game is its outstanding chiptune soundtrack, with great tunes like Milli & Greg, Underground Groove, and Metal Factory. This sort of soundtrack reminds me of the works of the great Danny Baranowski, and perfectly captures the feeling of a great classic game from the NES era.
When it comes to the gameplay, Milli & Greg is simple, but does a lot with that simplicity. Milli has a jump, a wall jump, and an air dash that charges after her feet set down on solid ground. These mechanics combined with some well-crafted gameplay make this feel a lot like Celeste, although this game doesn’t have nearly as much cleverness as that game, nor is its story anywhere near as deep.
Still, for a mere $4, a game that could easily be billed as “Celeste Lite” is an absolute steal, and along with its delightful presentation, this is a game I’d say is worth playing for any fan of Platformers. It’s not going to do anything to completely reinvent the genre, but what’s here is fun, well-crafted, and has so much old-school nostalgia that I think it’ll be hard not to be charmed by it.
tl;dr – Milli & Greg is a challenging Platformer about a young girl trying to get to her pet cat. The presentation here is full of outstanding old-school charm, and the gameplay is very well-crafted, feeling vaguely similar to Celeste (albeit without that game’s inventive late-game mechanics and deep story). If you’re a fan of Platformers, this one is well worth the $4 price tag.
