Review:

Mimic Hunter is an Action-Platformer with Puzzle-Platformer elements released in 2018 on PC and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2019. This game places you in the role of an anthropomorphic rat using his sword to fight various types of “mimic” monsters on rotating towers.

This game uses a hand-drawn art style which it then manipulates into a “2.5D” visual presentation by having the character move around rotating towers. It’s an interesting and somewhat unique look, though I can’t say it’s terribly appealing. This is backed by a droning, forgettable soundtrack.

The basic idea of the gameplay here is sound – puzzles and actions on a rotating 2D plane is something that seems like it has potential to be interesting and unique. Unfortunately, any potential this game had is ruined by absolutely atrocious controls and terrible mechanics. The button layout here is absolutely ridiculous (jump is assigned to ZR, attack to R, and the “confirm” button is assigned to one of the L buttons, for a few examples), and even if you can move past this, the mechanics for both jumping and combat in this game are absolutely terrible, making it excruciatingly difficult to do either with any sort of precision. Heck, even movement is sluggish and loose.

I won’t mince words – I hated Mimic Hunter. From the moment I started moving my character around, I wanted to stop playing this game. That’s just how bad the controls and mechanics are here. I give this game the most minute, bear minimum amount of credit for having some interesting gameplay ideas and maybe, maybe if someone can tolerate its poor controls they’ll find some value in what’s here. But for most, I’d recommend you stay far, far away from this game.

tl;dr – Mimic Hunter is an Action-Platformer with some Puzzle-Platformer elements that has you using the sword of an anthropomorphic rat to fight off “mimic” monsters. There are some interesting gameplay ideas here, but the controls here are so abysmally terrible that it ruins any enjoyment there is to be had here.
