Review:
Mini Trains is a Puzzle/Simulation game where you are building small model train tracks to ensure that the trains hit multiple points on a map before going to a station, without colliding with each other.
It works well enough for a puzzle game, although it’s nothing that has that “can’t put it down” quality that you look for in this sort of thing. On the other hand, the game does add a few little nice flourishes to enhance the experience, such as allowing you to view the trains from inside the trains themselves, even tooting the horn, and the controls from outside the trains seem like they could be real controls for a train set.
Graphically, the game does nothing special, but it has a nice, simple style that works for the game.
Overall, the game is fine, but I can’t help but feel that it’s a missed opportunity. This game seems really well set up to be a cute little simulation game, where you make your own ideal little train set… but it’s not that. It’s just a puzzle game with little bits of inspired design that seem perfect for a simulation game. And I can’t help but feel a little disappointed that this is all the game aspires to be, when it could have been the stepping-off point for something bigger and better.
Still, as a Puzzle game, Mini Trains is decent and the little touches of Simulation elements help to give it some personality. It may not be everything it could be, but what it is is decent enough, I suppose.
tl;dr – Mini Trains is a Puzzle game with Simulation elements where you build train tracks to direct trains to hit multiple points without crashing. It’s okay, but there’s so much potential for more here that it feels like a missed opportunity.
