Review:
Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae is a Spectacle Fighter like Devil May Cry and God of War, a single-player experience where you are fighting multiple enemies using complex fighting mechanics, and in this case, it is a game where you are fighting various demons as a young woman in a Japanese school girl outfit.
Clearly, seeing a sexy girl in fetishy clothing doing all sorts of acrobatics is a part of this game’s appeal, and to that end, the game has lovingly rendered the main character in particular to great detail. Oh, the other characters and environments in the game look good too, just not as much as the main character and the villainess antagonist.
Well… but on that note, while the game’s environments look good, they also look sparse. They pretty much all take place on a flat stretch of land or rooftop in a closed arena. This does put the focus squarely on the action, but it also really limits the variety in the game’s environs.
As for the game’s battle engine, it’s actually… pretty good. No, seriously, you’re given a wide variety of fighting skills to use, with the ability to upgrade them and learn more over the course of the game, and the game even works in a nice mechanic that requires you to trade off between normal melee attacks and sword attacks to “recharge” the sword, a nice way of making players mix up their attacks. Players can also sheathe their sword to recharge it completely and do a stun attack to nearby bleeding enemies, but doing so leaves you vulnerable for a few seconds.
It’s surprising to see a fighting system this in depth in a game that at least on the surface aims for titillation, but unfortunately there’s a downside – as with the game’s environments, the enemies are extremely repetitive, and you’ll find yourself fighting wave after wave of the same thugs with little variation.
It’s a shame too, because with the solid graphics and the well-designed fighting engine, Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae actually could have been a really good budget alternative to the likes of Devil May Cry, but unfortunately the repetitive enemies and repetitive arenas make it so this is a game you’ll tire of quickly. And with other games in the genre like Bayonetta 1 & 2 and, oh yeah, the original Devil May Cry, also available on the Switch, it makes this game hard to recommend… well, unless you absolutely need to have a game with a sexy girl in a schoolgirl outfit fighting a bunch of enemies.
tl;dr – Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae is a Speactacle Fighter like Devil May Cry that’s clearly going for sex appeal with its sexy protagonist fighting in a schoolgirl outfit, but also surprisingly manages to have a good fighting engine underneath the spectacle. Unfortunately, the game’s enemies and environments are too repetitive to really hold your interest for long.
