Review:
Muddledash is a Platformer/Party Game where two to four players play cartoony octopus-like creatures all in a mad race for the finish line, with the caveat that the winner will be whoever arrives there first carrying a gift that players will be squabbling over for the entire trip.
It’s a fun concept, and it makes for some frantic energy as players try to navigate the stage while attacking the gift-holder. Having said that, there are some issues.
First, there are no bots in this game, meaning that not only are you stuck with the number of players you have, but the game is unplayable in single-player.
Second, actually fighting over the gift isn’t strategic in any way – it kinda’ feels like luck more than anything who ends up managing to hold on to the thing.
Third, if the player in the lead gets too far in the lead, players lagging behind automatically transport close to that player’s location. This keeps the competition high, but it also cuts down on the “race” part of this, since there’s no benefit to rushing ahead of the others.
Fourth, while the game uses randomly-generated levels to add variety, the parts of those levels are so lacking in variety, especially the visuals, that you’ll swear you’ve played the same level within a few rounds of the game, even though you definitely haven’t.
This isn’t to say that Muddledash isn’t fun in short bursts, but it feels like this probably should have been fleshed out into a more complete concept. As it is, it’s just a brief distraction.
tl;dr – Muddledash is a Platformer/Party game where 2-4 players race to be the first to reach the finish line while holding a gift they’re all squabbling over. It’s a decent idea, but multiple serious flaws really limit the fun you can have with this game.
