Review:
Musynx is a Music-Rhythm game much in the same vein as Voez and Deemo (also from publisher PM Studios, though from a different developer), where players are tapping notes corresponding with lanes much in the same way as the Guitar Hero games.
Like Voez, most of this game’s music is either Asian indie pop songs (from various countries), classical music, techno, or a song from an indie game. There’s a decent variety of songs here, with 92 songs total, but the quality varies wildly – the first two songs in particular I found to be atrocious (being that anime-esque cutesy sort of song sung by a child with a shrill voice), but there were good songs here too. Unfortunately, there’s no way to make a playlist or select favorites, meaning that if you want to play songs you like, you have to shuffle through all 92 songs to get to them.
The presentation here is also a bit mixed, with different sections of the song selection featuring different backgrounds – some cute and simple, some actually quite eye-catching (without being distracting).
As for the gameplay itself… huge warning: you will want to mess with the options before playing this game. By default, this game had buttons mapped in a way that made my hands cramped, but it thankfully allows you to remap them how you want. In addition, by default the game’s sound seems to cut out in every note, and thankfully there’s an option to stop the game from doing this, because it’s really distracting.
Once you get all that out of the way though, this is a solid music-rhythm game, although it doesn’t do anything particularly interesting for the genre. I would say this game is actually better than both Deemo and Voez when it comes to playing in docked mode, thanks largely to being able to remap the controls. However, the game’s difficulty level spikes way too quickly, and this is true in handheld mode as well. In handheld mode, this game does make use of a touchscreen, but it didn’t feel as responsive as either Voez or Deemo, unfortunately.
In the end, Musynx is a decent Music-Rhythm game once you fiddle with the features to fix the game’s terrible default settings. However, even then, this game is a mix of really good and really bad elements. The song selection has some real stinkers along with some good ones, and the visuals range from excellent to terrible. However, if you’re looking for a good music-rhythm game on the Switch and aren’t interested in the more touchscreen-focused games Voez and Deemo, this one should satisfy you.
tl;dr – Musynx is a Music-Rhythm game that has you pressing buttons or tapping the touchscreen in time with the beat as notes fall down columns like in Guitar Hero. Once you fiddle with the game settings, this is a solid Music-Rhythm game, though it doesn’t do anything especially new and it never quite reaches the heights of Deemo and Voez, thanks in part to an uneven track selection and presentation. Still worth a look for fans of the genre, though.
