Review:
My Diggy Dog 2 is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer released on mobile devices in 2019 and ported to PC and Nintendo Switch in 2020. In this game, players take the role of a dog jumping and digging through small self-contained levels within various caves.
I’m of two minds about the presentation in this game. On the one hand, this game is extremely polished. It uses a cartoony 2D art style that looks good, is well-animated, and is backed by decent sound effects. On the other hand, just about everything about the way this game is presented seems to scream “mobile game”, from the way the overworld map is presented to the sounds that are made and victory fanfare that plays as you earn “stars” for completing stages. It is by no means bad, but it definitely evokes a feeling of a game you could be playing on your phone (and, you know, you can).
As for the gameplay itself, this is fairly standard Puzzle-Platformer fare, although I use the word “puzzle” there very lightly, as there’s little in this game that’s likely to challenge players to expend too much thought. At the very least I can say it should be easy enough for a small child to play, though more seasoned Puzzle game players will likely find themselves growing bored quickly.
One more thing before finishing up. This game retains the touchscreen controls of the mobile version, which means there’s an on-screen control pad of sorts when using the touchscreen. This is a nice inclusion, I suppose, though it feels a bit pointless on the Nintendo Switch, as most players will likely opt to use the real buttons and control stick rather than the simulated one. I’m actually more annoyed that the game doesn’t allow the use of the D-Pad, since this is not the sort of game that makes use of the sort of subtle movement an analog stick is designed for.
Overall, My Diggy Dog 2 is a Puzzle-Platformer that’s probably pretty ideal for youngsters looking for something simple to cut their teeth on, and its solid presentation makes it extra appealing, but more veteran players within the genre are better off looking elsewhere.
tl;dr – My Diggy Dog 2 is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that has you playing a dog in small self-contained levels where you jump and dig through dirt to reach an exit. It’s polished in its presentation but pretty simple and basic in its gameplay. This one’s more for the kids than for veterans of the genre.
