Review:
My Memory of Us is a Graphic Adventure that tells the story of two children trying to make it by amidst the horrors of war.
So… how do I even get into this… this game is about the Holocaust. It doesn’t say it’s about the Holocaust, and it goes to some pretty cringe-y lengths to build its narrative in a way that makes it out to be a metaphor, but it’s a pretty ham-fisted one, in my opinion. An evil robot army, a system that divides the populace and paints (literally in this case) a portion of the populace as an evil scapegoat to be othered… the heroine in this game even wears a bright red coat in an otherwise monochrome game, stealing and repurposing the symbolism straight out of Schindler’s List.
As much as I didn’t care for how this story is being told, I have to give it some credit for at least doing so with some degree of skill – there is some good art design here, and the narration is voiced by Sir Patrick Stewart.
As for the game itself, this is mostly standard graphic adventure fare, with occasional frustrating puzzles. However, what’s really frustrating are occasional situations where the game delves into other genres, such as stealth, or sections where players must race to escape the forces hunting them, which the game’s controls make a frustrating and tedious affair.
In the end, if you don’t mind being hit over the head with the game’s symbolism, and if you enjoy the genre, My Memory of Us may give you a good time with its solid presentation. For my part, I can’t help but feel like I’d rather just re-watch Schindler’s List.
tl;dr – My Memory of Us is a Graphic Adventure that has you following two children as they try to navigate through and make sense of a big Holocaust metaphor. The game is overly ham-fisted in its handling of the story, and occasionally heads into other types of gameplay it does poorly, but it does at least have a solid presentation.
