Review:
Neverlast is a First-Person Action game where players play a sword-wielding character in a dark medieval fantasy setting, and where each playthrough of the game features randomized elements, like your weapon and magic spell.
In still screenshots and in the game’s artwork, this game looks fantastic, but that illusion quickly fades as soon as you actually start the game and find that the game is absolutely plagued with horrible frame rates that cripple the game into a slide show, with generic environments that make you wonder just why the Switch chugs so terribly playing the thing.
It’s not just the visuals and performance that are bad here – the gameplay is atrocious. While set up like a First-Person shooter minus the shooting, this game gives the player no way to look up or down, leaving the view bolted in place. And unlike old FPS games like Doom that were similarly vertically-challenged, the level design here includes a great deal of verticality, with staircases you won’t be able to look up or down while ascending or descending. On top of this, environments are littered with objects you would expect to be able to interact with, like treasure chests and barrels, but appear to just be non-interactive set dressing. It makes me wonder if this game’s scenery was just copy-pasted from some other game, or if the game was halted partway into development and just released as-is because “eh, screw it”.
The actual combat here is also absurdly bad – you attack with a sword, and you have a spell to use, and that’s it. Strategically, it seems like generally your best option is to use your magic first so it can recharge sooner, then attack and back away from the enemy to avoid a counter-attack. Wash, rinse, repeat. However, strategically, your absolute best bet is to avoid this game altogether.
Neverlast is a terrible mess of a game that was either put together by someone who copy-pasted elements and didn’t know what they were doing, or was only a fraction of the way through the development process when it was released far, far too early. In either case, what’s here is an unplayable mess. Do not get this game.
tl;dr – Neverlast is a First-Person Action game that’s a horrible, shoddy, broken mess, with atrocious framerates, brain-dead combat, and gameplay and world design that was either pushed out the door far too early, or designed by someone who doesn’t understand how games work. In either case, you absolutely should not waste your money on this.
