Review:
Night Vision, released on Nintendo Switch in 2021 is an Application that uses the Nintendo Switch right Joy-Con’s infrared camera as a… well, infrared camera, displaying the image the camera detects on-screen with a static overlay that looks like a night vision goggle display.
That’s… really all there is here. There are no options whatsoever – you cannot change the settings, cannot take photos or video within the app, cannot use multiple right Joy-Cons to pull in multiple images at the same time, you can’t even change the on-screen overlay.
This is on top of the fact that the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con infrared camera makes for a pretty terrible camera. There’s a massive delay from what your camera detects to what appears on-screen, the framerates are a horrible slide show, the image is in monochrome (and only a green monochrome due to the lack of color adjustments), and the camera can only detect a short distance from the Joy-Con, and doesn’t see images but rather shapes and heat.
Much of that is likely an issue with the hardware rather than with this app, but it still raises the question of why Night Vision was created in the first place when the hardware was so inadequate for what it’s purporting to do… and then why this application was then thrust out onto the market without even a semblance of options or settings. Even if this app worked, it would be niche and gimmicky, but it doesn’t work, and even if you’re amused by the concept it’s not worth paying the $10 asking price or even the $2 sale price to get this when you’ll use it for a few minutes and then never want to touch it again.
tl;dr – Night Vision is an Application that uses the Nintendo Switch right Joy-Con’s infrared camera as… an infrared camera. Unfortunately, the Joy-Con’s camera is pretty terrible as a camera, and this software has absolutely no features or options to speak of. Even as a cute little gimmick, this Application absolutely fails to do anything worthwhile.
