Review:
Odium to the Core is an Arcade-style single-button game where you are trying to navigate a spike red eye through a twisting path, with one button raising his trajectory, which otherwise gradually turns downward. It’s a simple concept, done well in some games (Jetpack Joyride comes to mind), and making other games infamous (do you remember Flappy Bird?).
Here, it’s paired with some pretty striking visuals that make use of a limited color palette to make for a bold look. Nothing impressive, but nice all the same.
As for how it plays… honestly, I was really frustrated by how holding the button turns the screen instead of simply raising up your character. It’s hard to gauge how fast your character will turn, and on top of that you’re sluggish to change course, and these things made navigating some corridors far more difficult than it should have been.
In the end, Odium to the Core looks nice, but the gameplay just doesn’t work well, even with such a simple formula.
tl;dr – Odium to the Core is a game where you use one button to raise or lower a spiky eyeball’s trajectory through a series of twisting corridors. It looks good, but I think the changing perspective works against the gameplay and the controls are too sluggish.
