Review:
Offroad Mini Racing is a Top-Down Racing game released on Nintendo Switch in 2021, having players race on random tracks using one of a variety of different types of vehicles.
The presentation here is pretty unimpressive, using simple 3D visuals and some pretty plain-looking, repetitive race tracks. The 3D models for the vehicles look decent, but nothing special. These visuals are backed by generic-sounding rock music.
The gameplay itself is pretty terrible in multiple ways. Firstly, players move their vehicle by using the analog stick, with both steering and acceleration tied to the stick, something that’s extremely frustrating until you discover that you don’t need to keep pressing up to continue accelerating – as soon as you’re up to speed, you’ll just keep going indefinitely. I should note that players can’t opt to use the directional buttons in place of the stick – those buttons are not used in this game at all.
The other issue here is that jumps fling players about wildly, and landing from any decent-sized jump can spin your car around like a top in all but the heaviest of vehicles. This is the one challenge the game offers to players, as racing in this game is otherwise simple and straightforward, and computer-controlled cars drive so slowly it’s like the game is compensating for how wildly each jump tossed your car around.
Then there’s the complete lack of features most would consider standard for this sort of game – no multiplayer, the lack of a proper title screen (starting up the game just brings you right into a car selection screen), the lack of a course select (as previously stated, tracks in the game are random, though I can’t say whether they’re randomly-generated or just randomly-selected from a pre-determined set of tracks).
There is just so much that Offroad Mini Racing gets wrong, and I strain to think of anything it gets right. If you’re looking for a fun Top-Down Racing game on Nintendo Switch, look elsewhere.
tl;dr – Offroad Mini Racing is a Top-Down Racing game with underwhelming visuals, bad controls, messed-up physics, no multiplayer, no track selection… so much about this game is shoddy or broken that I can’t think of any reason why you should bother with it.
