Review:

Omega Strike is an Action=Platformer with strong Metroidvania elements released in 2017 on PC, and then ported in 2018 to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. This game has players swapping between three military personnel with different skills as they fight against an army of mutant soldiers that an evil doctor is using to take over the world. This game is not to be confused with Omega Strikers, a completely different and unrelated game.

The presentation in this game is quite good, with some nice-looking retro-style 2D pixel art visuals backed by a really catchy synthesized soundtrack, with great tunes like Resistance Caverns and Cloudtop Mountain.

The gameplay here has a lot in common with Metroidvania games, though it falls just a bit short when it comes to being a part of that genre because this game doesn’t use an interconnected map, but instead has multiple areas you travel to, with each having some branching paths but otherwise largely being linear.

The gameplay here is pretty good, with players gradually unlocking three characters with different abilities, as well as unlocking further abilities for those characters. I do think that the pacing of this game is a bit slow – you can go a while between getting significant upgrades, and the enemies and obstacles you face can get repetitive. However, despite these issues, the gameplay remains enjoyable.

I do think the $15 price tag seems a bit much for what’s on offer here, but this game regularly goes on sale for under $3, and at that price I’d say this is worth it – this isn’t the best Action-Platformer or Metroidvania out there, but it’s a solid one that’s enjoyable if a tad slow-paced and repetitive. Definitely worth a look!

tl;dr – Omega Strike is an Action-Platformer with Metroidvaia elements that has players gradually unlocking abilities for three swappable characters. This game can be a tad slow-paced and repetitive, but overall it’s an enjoyable retro-style experience, and fans of these genres will find it worth a try, especially if you can catch it in a good sale.
