Review:
Omega Strikers, released in 2023 on PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, is a free-to-play 3 vs. 3 Sports game that’s roughly comparable to an Arcade-style take on Hockey, Soccer, or some similar sport where you’re trying to get a ball or puck pas the opposing team and into a goal. Since it’s a disc in this game, I suppose the closest analogy is Hockey, though this game is unrealistic enough that it’s not quite like any real-life sport. Oh, and this game is not to be confused with Omega Strike, a completely different and unrelated game.
The presentation in Omega Strikers is very good, with fully-animated anime-stye cutscenes, and well-designed 3D cel-shaded anime-style characters. By comparison, the 3D arenas you play in are a bit bland, but at least they’re colorful. All of this is backed by an energetic Rock-style soundtrack and decent English voice clips for the characters.
As for the gameplay, Omega Strikers is okay, with characters able to attack the disc and other players using different abilities that run on separate cooldowns. There’s a selection of different characters, but no matter who you choose, the gameplay kinda’ feels like a frenetic dogpile, and unfortunately the walk speed is so slow you’ll likely be frustrated when you character is struggling to get to the disc like they’re walking through molasses.
There is one other issue I should mention here. I can’t say absolutely for certain, but I’m pretty sure the only players who seem to still be on this game right now are bots, as they all have the same odd, idiosyncratic movements. Regardless, playing this game online just did not feel like playing with other actual, real people.
In the end, for a free Sports game, Omega Strikers isn’t horrible, but I just don’t know that there’s going to be enough here to hold the interest of any players still wanting to try their hand at this game, especially with the superb Rocket League also being free, and far more fast-paced and engaging… and also offering actual human opponents to play against. Because of this, Omega Strikers may not cost you a single penny, but it’s still probably not worth your time.
tl;dr – Omega Strikers is a free-to-play Sports game that’s sorta’ like an Arcade-style take on Hockey. The premise is sound and the presentation is good, but the gameplay is somehow both messy and frenetic and also far too slow, and it looks like you’ll likely just end up playing your games with rooms full of bots. This isn’t a terrible game, but it just doesn’t seem very compelling, especially when Rocket League is also free and offers a more fast-paced team Sports game option.
