Review:

OS Omega is a 2-Stick Shooter with Roguelike elements released on PC in 2020 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2021. This game has players taking the role of what I think is supposed to be an anthropomorphic computer program fighting various other programs and living microchips.

It’s hard to tell for certain because this game’s 3D visuals are so poor, with low-poly characters that are at best an abstract representation of… whatever they are. Being abstract would be fine if the game at least made it clear what everything represents as far as gameplay goes, but often it is difficult to tell what is a bit of ammo or a weapon pickup and what is a bit of debris, or determine if something is an enemy or harmless decoration. And these terrible, low-quality visuals apparently take up 442MB of space in the Nintendo Switch’s memory, which seems absurd given what’s on display here.

The sound is similarly lacking, with a complete lack of sounds for most actions in the game – firing, hitting enemies, getting hit… all dead silent. Defeated enemies at least let off a weak explosion, but mostly this game is silent, forcing you to listen to its boring, minimalist, synthesized soundtrack.

Sadly, the gameplay doesn’t save this wreck either. The control layout is awkward, and not properly explained even in the game’s tutorial. Goals are unclear. Gameplay is repetitive and boring. Gunplay is terrible, with most shots fired at enemies bouncing over their heads even if your aim is spot-on. However, enemies likewise can’t seem to hit the broadside of a barn unless you stand still and let yourself get shot.

In many, many, many ways, this feels like an incomplete game released without any sort of product testing or quality control. This isn’t just a bad experience, it feels like a fundamentally broken and unfinished one. There are tons of great 2-Stick Shooters and Roguelikes on the Nintendo Switch, do not waste your time or money on this one.

tl;dr – OS Omega is a 2-Stick Shooter with Roguelike elements that has you playing an anthropomorphized computer program fighting other programs and microchips… or something. This game looks terrible, sounds terrible, controls terrible, and in so many ways just feels like a broken and incomplete experience. Do not buy it.
