Review:
Party Golf is an Arcade/Party Game that feels ever so slightly reminiscent of the Worms games or, if you want to get really old-school, Gorillas (the DOS/BASIC game where apes fling bananas at each other), where multiple players are competing on a 2D stage by shooting things and judging trajectory. However, here your main goal isn’t to blow other players up, but to get your ball to the goal.
Unlike normal golf, this all happens in real-time, and your “strokes” aren’t counted. Instead, you’re just whacking away at the ball until it gets where it needs to go. The only real rule retained from normal golf beyond getting the ball in the hole is that you have to wait until your ball comes to a stop before hitting it.
This… is actually kinda’ frustrating, since your ball can keep rolling down and away from where you want it even after it lands. What’s more, the other balls can collide with your own, making it more about luck than skill when all of you are trying to surmount a difficult obstacle at once and end up careening toward each other. And adding even further to that frustration is that courses at times have pits and if your ball falls in them or goes too far to the left or right, it “dies” and is returned to the beginning, meaning it’s far too easy to go from “I’ve almost won” to “there’s no way I will do batter than last place now”.
At the very least, this game has a wealth of features and game modes, allowing you to change the physics, or add in various attacks or alternate ways to play, although its single-player mode is just the multiplayer with bots. And the game’s visuals, while nothing especially interesting, are at least functional.
In the end, Golf Party is a decent party game with a lot of options and some frustrating gameplay. It’s not for everyone, but if you have a group of 8 people just looking for something silly to do for a little while, this might suffice to keep them entertained.
tl;dr – Golf Party is an Arcade/Party game where up to 8 players all compete in real-time to get their ball to the hole on a 2D course, bumping into one another and making use of all sorts of different game modes and options. The gameplay can at times be frustrating, but players may find some appeal in the chaotic action.
