Review:
Penguin Wars is a game with Arcade-style gameplay, a remake of an old arcade game from 1985, that works as a sort of glorified version of dodgeball. The gameplay has characters opposite each other on a flat table-level field, throwing across sliding balls in an attempt to hit each other. Get enough strikes and you win.
The game does some things to add in variety, such as bombs you try to shove toward the opponent, but the core gameplay remains much the same. Unfortunately, that core game is stiff and slow-paced and clunky. It’s simply not all that fun to move around in this game, and on top of that you don’t feel much precision in aiming when you throw balls… and moving and throwing balls are the two main things you do in this game.
Graphically, this game has a nice cartoony style, although it’s a bit plain in places. I felt like this was on the verge of something with a really great look, but it needed more work, so now it’s this mix of really nice color schemes and amateurish designs in some places, such as the designs on the game boards.
Ultimately, while Penguin Wars’ cartoony presentation and simple gameplay might entertain youngsters, its stiff and clunky controls keep it from being all that fun for very long.
tl;dr – Penguin Wars is an Arcade-style game that has characters tossing balls at each other like dodgeball. The game has a nice, colorful presentation, but the clunky controls keep this from being very fun.
