Review:

Persephone is a family-friendly character-based isometric Puzzle game where players must navigate mazes of deadly traps and solve puzzles, with the clever gimmick here being that any time the player dies, they leave a body behind. Players must make use of this unique mechanic to solve the game’s puzzles. This game was released on Xbox One in 2020 and ported to PC and Nintendo Switch in 2021.

This game uses hand-drawn visuals that are charming and colorful, albeit not especially impressive. The game looks nice but not noteworthy. This is paired with a nice acoustic soundtrack that does a good job of highlighting the fairytale-esque setting of the game.

As for the gameplay, Persephone’s one gimmick is the main thing it does here that’s inventive, but it’s put to good use in a variety of situations, and players have to be creative about where they die, when they die, even how they die, and players will be put to the test thinking about how this game’s simple rules work. On the bright side, players who get stuck needn’t stay that way – players who fail repeatedly have the option of seeing the puzzle solved if they want.

While this game doesn’t make use of any of the Nintendo Switch’s unique features like the touchscreen, its simple level-based design nevertheless makes it a good fit for a portable, and the gamepad controls work well enough, though as with any isometric game it takes a little adjustment to get your head in the space of which direction is which.

There’s not too much more to say about Persephone. This is a character-based Puzzle game that does what it does well, but doesn’t really push the envelope in any way. Players who are fans of the genre should certainly be pleased with this game, even if they’re not blown away by it.

tl;dr – Persephone is a family-friendly character-based Puzzle game where players must use the bodies from their previous deaths to solve the game’s puzzles. It’s a clever gimmick that’s used well here, and although this game doesn’t do anything truly extraordinary, it’s a solid entry in its genre that’s well worth playing.
