Review:
Katana Zero is an Action-Platformer where players play as a sword-swinging samurai assassin in the modern day taking out contracts on targets handed out by a shady employer, all while he tries to uncover his own shady past, as well as the secrets swirling around him.
The game has a cool 80s-inspired presentation with a lot of trippy effects, thanks in part to the mysterious drugs that the protagonist takes. The game also has a fantastic soundtrack to keep things moving while you slice through enemies.
As for the gameplay, the character you play, who the media has dubbed “The Dragon”, fights using speed and stealth to compliment his blade. This is a game where one hit kills, and that’s true for you as well, and you will die many, many, many times.
When this game works, it feels like a brilliant ballet of violence. Action here is fast-paced, and going from one kill to another to another while grabbing up items from the environment to toss as interference… when you can get it all to work, it feels amazing.
However, it doesn’t always work. There are many times when it feels like you only lost because some random element was only just sliiiiightly out of place, and given that you can’t have even one slip-up, having to repeat a section of a level with a lot of enemies can start to feel really frustrating and tedious.
On the whole, this is an excellent, slick, fast-paced action game with a great presentation. It’s occasionally frustrating due to how unforgiving its gameplay can be, but on the whole this is a fantastic Action-Platformer.
tl;dr – Katana Zero is a fast-paced Action-Platformer that has you playing a drug-fueled samurai assassin in an 80s-inspired setting, fighting through hordes of enemies where one hit kills. It’s a lot of fun and makes for some great action… except for those times when you get stuck dying again and again because of how unforgiving the game can be.
