Review:
Kitty Love is a Visual Novel released on Nintendo Switch in 2018. More specifically, this is an Otome game that has players taking the role of a young woman who works at a flower shop who one evening receives a curse that forces her to transform into a cat during nights. She is told that this curse can only be removed by kissing her true love, a task that troubles her, because she currently has no interest in anyone… although there do happen to be five guys that she sees on a regular basis during her life…
So I’ll get this game’s main flaw out of the way right off the bat – the localization here is pretty bad. There are numerous spelling errors throughout the game, and while it’s usually not so bad that you can’t understand what was intended, it still breaks the immersion in the story.
That flaw aside, Kitty Love’s story is generally pretty adorable, and its characters are all likable. There’s a nice little lesson here about how even the people we see on a regular basis may have hidden depths that we don’t ordinarily see, although it does seem a bit too convenient that all of these guys secretly turn to big softies around a cute widdle kitty.
Through the course of each guy’s story path, you’ll have multiple points where you can choose one of multiple options, and choosing correctly can lead to a different ending. However, overall it doesn’t seem like there’s generally much that players do here to influence the story.
In terms of the presentation, this game uses nice anime-style art for its 2D character portraits, and some nice-looking painted backgrounds. All of the characters are nicely voiced (in Japanese), and the game also has a lighthearted soundtrack that works well enough for the game, but isn’t especially memorable. Also, I should note that this game has good gamepad controls and good touchscreen controls – either works.
In the end, Kitty Love is a decent lighthearted Otome game. It doesn’t do anything especially noteworthy for the genre, but it works well enough for what it’s aiming to do, despite a terrible localization. I will say that the normal price of $25 seems steep for what’s on offer here. However, if you’re looking for a more easygoing romantic story, or if you like the idea of a protagonist who gets transformed into a cat, I think you’ll be satisfied with this game… just perhaps when it goes on sale.
tl;dr – Kitty Love is a Visual Novel about a young woman who is cursed to transform into a cat during nights and must kiss her true love to break the spell… only she’s not really interested in anyone at the moment. This game’s localization is pretty bad, but the story is cute, the characters likable, and the presentation is nice. If the story concept appeals to you, you may enjoy this one… but wait for it to go on sale ($25 is too high for what’s on offer here).
