Review:
Knowledge Trainer, released on Nintendo Switch in 2019, is a Party Game that, as the name implies, has players answering trivia questions.
The presentation here is very simple, just showing the words for each question, and with a violin-led soundtrack comparable to the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. It’s not at all impressive, but it works, I suppose.
The soundtrack isn’t the only thing here like Millionaire – the entire setup of the game feels reminiscent of that show, with each question giving players four multiple-choice answers. However, unlike Millionaire, there’s no gradually-rising difficulty, with only five difficulty levels and with some pretty stark spikes in the difficulty of the questions from one level to the next. There’s also no nuance to the gameplay, no “50/50” or “phone a friend”… this game is just answering one question after another, ad infinitum.
The game does give players the option to see their stats, and even to go back and re-answer questions they previously missed, and it has over 6000 questions total in some pretty diverse areas, so I suppose this might provide a decent training tool for those looking to actually go on a trivia game show, but as a game itself, this is pretty bland and mediocre. At the very least, this game does include touchscreen controls, which work well enough thanks to the large buttons and text.
There’s nothing wrong or broken with Knowledge Trainer: Trivia, but it’s a bland and boring experience. For the asking price of $15, this game seems overpriced for what you get, and it pales in comparison to the sort of fun and varied trivia experiences you’ll find in the sort of games offered by the Jackbox packages. If all you want is a slew of rapid-fire trivia questions, this game does that, but I’d say it’s simply not worth it for most players.
tl;dr – Knowledge Trainer is a trivia-focused Party game. It has a clean presentation and a wealth of questions, but there’s little in the way of variety or personality, and the $15 price tag is quite high when there are much better games in the genre already on the Nintendo Switch. Skip this one.
