Review:
Koloro is an Auto-Runner released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2018 and ported to PlayStation 4 in 2020. This game has players playing a young girl searching for her sister and magically transformed into a square to save her (because squares can wall jump, apparently).
The presentation here is simple, but has a sort of serene beauty to it, using simple 2D shapes with a striking color palette and varying degrees of focus, along with a quiet, serene soundtrack to create a peaceful, contemplative tone.
The gameplay itself seems to clash with this tone somewhat – Koloro is a difficult game, and players will undoubtedly die countless times while playing it. However, it manages to have some really clever level design that makes it a joy to play through, with new challenges and mechanics introduced fairly regularly to build on the game’s simple mechanics that make use of only one button – you automatically move forward, and you can jump and wall jump, and the only way to change direction is to wall jump. To complete each level, you must collect all of the crystals in that level and reach its exit. Yet with only that simple starting point, the game finds ways to make for some really clever levels using different sorts of environmental features and hazards.
One of the things that really surprised me about Koloro is just how massive an amount of content is here – the game boasts over 300 levels, and there’s a full-fledged co-op mode that features completely different levels to tackle with a friend. That this game sells for $10 is a pretty good deal. That it goes on sale regularly for $2 is an absolute steal.
If you’re a fan of Auto-Runners, in particular challenging ones, and you want to play something that approaches the genre with some really great level design and has some fantastic co-op, you should absolutely try Koloro. This game takes simple gameplay and uses great level design to transform it into something that’s one of the better games in its genre.
tl;dr – Koloro is an Auto-Runner about a girl transformed into a square wall-jumping back and forth in a surprisingly massive number of well-designed levels, with some great co-op levels to play as well. If you’re looking for a simple, challenging, well-designed Platformer, this game is absolutely worth a look.
