Review:

Last Day of June is a Graphic Adventure that places you in the role of a widower revisiting the memories of his lost love and wondering how things could have gone differently on that fateful day, with a plot that plays out something like a combination of Groundhog Day and Rashomon by having you progressing through the same day multiple times from multiple perspectives.

The visuals and sound here are absolutely gorgeous, looking almost like a dreamy stop-motion animation with simplified characters without eyes or mouths, the game uses lighting and atmosphere to do a great job of setting the scene, and its soundtrack is a wonderful accompaniment to the events onscreen.

The gameplay is a bit less extraordinary. It has you playing not only the widower but also the various neighbors that played a role in that day, has you choosing a different course for their actions to take, solving minor puzzles to get there. Nothing here is especially clever or challenging, and it mostly serves to give you something to do as you go through the game’s story, which is over in 3-5 hours.

While Last Day of June is light on gameplay, the presentation here is so pleasant that I’d still recommend it. It’s a delightful experience while it lasts.

tl;dr – Last Day of June is a Graphic Adventure that has you revisiting the day of a tragic accident from multiple perspectives while you try to change the course of events. There’s not much to the gameplay here, and the game is on the short side, but the visuals and music are absolutely lovely, and they make this a really enjoyable experience.

Grade: B+
