Letter Quest Remastered is a combination of Turn-Based RPG and Puzzle game that has you fighting enemies by spelling out words, sorta’ like if someone took a game like Scrabble or Boggle and turned it into an RPG. Players gradually increase their stats, but the core gameplay is pretty much just spelling the best words you can with the letters provided.

The presentation in this game is a mix of very good and mediocre. The hand-drawn art here is decent and gets the job done, but is completely generic and forgettable. The sound effects are also forgettable and the game feels oddly quiet… but on the other hand, the orchestral soundtrack is fantastic, and helps to make up for the rest of the game’s lack of personality.

As for the gameplay, as a linguaphile, I have to say I find that an RPG that incorporates spelling and vocabulary is a very appealing idea. On the other hand, I feel like the game doesn’t go far enough with these ideas. The RPG elements aren’t especially well-done or novel, and while the game does try to throw some twists into the spelling part of the game, most just take the form of “you have to use these letters quickly”, “you can’t use these letters for a while”, or “you get a bonus when you use these letters. And unlike Boggle, which challenges players to string together adjacent letters, and Scrabble, which challenges players to place the letters strategically, here there’s little reason to be mindful of where the letters are in your tile grid. Oh, and one other complaint – the speed at which enemies’ strength ramps up in this game seems to require grinding, which isn’t especially fun or compelling.

In the end, Letter Quest Remastered is still a decent combination of a Turn-Based RPG and a spelling Puzzle game, but in multiple ways it fails to really capitalize on its strengths, resulting in a game that’s worth playing for a fan of the genre, but nothing truly great.

tl;dr – Letter Quest Remastered is a game that combines a Turn-Based RPG with a spelling-based Puzzle game like Boggle or Scrabble. It’s a decent pairing of the two, but it doesn’t really meet its full potential, with too much grind and not enough depth. Still worth playing for genre fans, but nothing truly great.
