Review:
Little Nightmares I & II Bundle, released on the Nintendo Switch in 2022, is a Compilation of Little Nightmares Complete Edition and Little Nightmares II, which were released separately on Nintendo Switch in 2018 and 2021 respectively.
I have previously reviewed both of these games. Here is what I thought of each of the games in this collection:
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Little Nightmares Complete Edition | Puzzle-Platformer | 1 | B- |
tl;drLittle Nightmares is a Puzzle-Platformer that has players taking the role of a young child escaping a nightmarish prison ship filled with grotesque monsters. There’s some really great atmosphere here, and some solid puzzles, but the 3D platforming and fixed camera perspective makes the platforming needlessly frustrating, and the long loading times exacerbate that frustration. Overall it’s still good, but only if you have the patience to work through those flaws. | |||
| Little Nightmares II | Puzzle-Platformer | 1 | C |
tl;drLittle Nightmares II is a Puzzle-Platformer that has players taking the role of a young child moving through a dangerous world filled with grotesque monsters and deadly traps, this time with an AI-controlled friend to work alongside. Like the first game, there’s some good atmosphere here, but the flaws are harder to look past this time, as they have an even greater effect on both the gameplay and presentation. Fans of the first game may still enjoy this, but most are better off sticking to games like Limbo, Inside, and Unravel Two that formed the inspiration for this game. | |||
In short, while these are both dark, violent Puzzle-Platformers with some strong presentation elements going for them, I think the first game is the better of the two, as the second game runs into some issues with its dual-character system and its context-sensitive commands that make the controls frustrating at points.
With that out of the way, the other question here is one of value, and as a package, Little Nightmares I & II Bundle is decent, shaving $10 off the combined prices of both games. This isn’t an absolute steal, but it’s a decent price if you know you want to get both of these games.
Overall, I still feel like both Little Nightmares games are chasing the greatness we saw in games like Limbo and Inside and it doesn’t quite reach that greatness, but it’s still pretty good at least (if a bit better in the first game than the sequel). If you’re looking for a pair of dark, atmospheric Puzzle-Platformers, Little Nightmares I & II Bundle is a pretty decent package, though you do have some better options within the genre.
tl;dr – Little Nightmares I & II Bundle is a Compilation that includes the two titular Puzzle-Platformers. Both games feature some solid puzzles and some wonderfully dark atmosphere, but the gameplay here isn’t quite on par with the likes of Limbo and Inside. However, if you’re looking to get into this series, this is a decent bundle that gives you a bit of a discount, and may be worth it for fans of the genre who have already played those other two great games.
Grade: C+
