Review:
LocO-Sports, released on the Nintendo Switch in 2020, is a Compilation of 10 minigames based on Summer Olympics-style Sports. The included sports are the Long Jump, High Jump, Hammer Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin, Shot Put, 100 Meter Dash, 800 Meter Dash, 400 Meter Hurdles, and Discus Throw.
The presentation here is very slipshod and feels like it’s pulled together from purchased elements – the blocky 3D characters are reminiscent of something out of a game like Minecraft, the world is largely barren and lacking detail, taking place entirely within one massive stadium. Inexplicably, there’s a dragon flying around in circles overhead. This is backed by generic-sounding sports music and canned cheering. Really uninspired. And making things more odd is this low-quality presentation takes up 990MB of memory space, and I’m just not sure where all that space is even going to.
Normally for Compilations, I’ll review each individual game, but I don’t really feel like that’s warranted here – most of the games here just piece together the same three elements – you have button-mashing with A, timed button presses with B, and a balance bar you try to keep centered with the left analog stick. That’s it.
Long Jump? That’s button-mashing followed by multiple timed button presses. Same with Hammer Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin, Shot Put… 100 Meter Dash is just button-mashing, no timed inputs needed… ugh, you get the idea.
LocO-Sports fulfills the bare minimum needed to be a game, but there’s no fun to be had here. This game is ugly, with boring gameplay that makes the 10 different sports blend into one another. The world may still be waiting for a truly great Olympics videogame, but not only is this one nowhere close to that ideal, it’s arguably a contender for the title of the worst.
tl;dr – LocO-Sports is an Compilation of 10 Summer Olympics-style Sports-themed minigames. Unfortunately, the game looks ugly and amateurish, and the gameplay is so simple that all the minigames blend into one another. Don’t buy this game.
