Love Colors is a family-friendly Art Application released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2021. It is a pixel art-style paint-by-numbers application.
For what it is, Love Colors has an excellent presentation, with some really nice pixel art designs and some lovely piano music playing in the background. Beyond that, there’s not much to talk about, but for what’s here, it’s quite good.
As for the way it plays, players select a color, and then fill in squares with a number corresponding to that color. Select a square not matching the number of the color you’re using, and you’ll only fill it lightly, and need to complete it later with the correct color. As this is not a game, there is no penalty or error or anything like that. Complete enough of an artwork and you unlock “paint buckets” that fill in an entire area of one color, and complete the entire artwork and you can see a sped-up version of your work from beginning to end.
And that’s… pretty much it. There’s no way to design your own artwork, unfortunately, nor can you choose which colors to fill in sections of an artwork with. At the very least I can say that the optional touchscreen controls here are excellent, and the game supports up to four players using controllers.
Here’s the issue, though. Paint-by-numbers is the sort of thing that’s likely to only appeal to very young kids, and those young kids may be confused by this game’s interface, and frustrated by the inability to freely create whatever art they want. Older players will likely grow bored of this application almost immediately. So I’m not really sure who this title is for.
If you want a paint-by-numbers Art Application on the Nintendo Switch, well, this is it. However, I can’t see this being a title that will interest many players, and regardless of what age group you’re in, I can’t see it holding your interest for very long. It’s just too limited in its scope to really be all that entertaining or useful for virtually anyone looking for an Art Application.
tl;dr – Love Colors is a family-friendly paint-by-numbers Art Application. Unfortunately, the limitations in the application, such as the inability to choose what color goes where or create your own artwork, really limits the appeal of this title. I can’t imagine this game being of much interest to anyone over the multiple better Art Applications on the Nintendo Switch.
