Review:
Luke & Rebecca is a Stealth game that has one or two players breaking into various guarded buildings, working their way through that building’s security systems, and stealing valuables.
This game uses pretty simple, uninteresting 16-Bit-style pixel art graphics, which is a bit disappointing given the wonderful, expressive anime-style art adorning the game’s menus. It’s not a terrible game to look at, but it’s really underwhelming nonetheless, especially for a game selling for $10.
On the topic of “underwhelming for its $10 price tag” is the gameplay. The stealth gameplay here is depressingly simple – evade guards and guard dogs (all of whom walk at the same sluggish speed you do), collect keycards to unlock doors to get to the computer rooms to take down additional parts of the security. Add in a few switches to lock/unlock color-coded doors here and there, but otherwise, that’s it. Plays have little in the way of options when they get caught beyond “run away and turn a corner”, which is pretty lame for a stealth game.
The sad thing is, the developers of this game actually did a wonderful job incorporating co-op in the game, with co-op-specific levels that do a great job of making players work together, unfortunately, beyond the clever level design, these areas also feature the same bland, one-note level design.
Finally, it bears note that this is a game that refuses to let players play with a Pro controller, despite that there’s absolutely nothing in the gameplay that requires a Joycon. This always makes a game just a bit more frustrating for me.
Luke & Rebecca isn’t a terrible Stealth game, but it is bare-bones basic both in its gameplay and its presentation. It’s frustrating this gameplay wasn’t developed to be more interesting, because the co-op level design is excellent, but the result is a game that it’s difficult for me to recommend.
tl;dr – Luke & Rebecca is a Stealth game that has you breaking into various buildings to steal valuables, but it is unfortunately dull, basic, and formulaic, despite its excellent co-op implementation. It’s not terrible, but I can’t really recommend it either.
