Review:

Galaxy Warfighter is a Shmup released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2020. This take on the genre lets players upgrade their ship in between runs so subsequent plays have you going into battle better armed and armored.

The presentation here is decent, featuring some nice 2D pixel art graphics and a rock-inspired synthesized soundtrack. Both work well enough, but are largely forgettable.

Okay, I’ve struggled to say much about this game so far, and there’s a reason for that – this is a pretty plain and uninspired entry in the Shmup genre. There’s just not much to this game beyond the upgrade system, which has slow progression and not nearly enough options, paling in comparison to other games that have a system like this.

Beyond this, Galaxy Warfighter features extremely simple, easy, repetitive gameplay. You’ll fight the same few ships over and over again, and there’s no nuance or art to the way they’re distributed, they seem sloppily deposited on the screen almost at random (or perhaps they are random?), and you just go back and forth mowing them down.

There is some appeal in a game as simple and dumbed-down as Galaxy Warfighter. It can be almost hypnotic mowing down enemies without a thought. But it’s not very engaging, and it’s so repetitive that you’ll likely tire of it quickly. This is not worth the $7 asking price, and even when it goes on sale for $2, you have to ask yourself if what you really need is a repetitive, boring, cookie-cutter Shmup, or if you want to play one of the many better entries in the genre on the Nintendo Switch.

tl;dr – Galaxy Warfighter is a Shmup where players can upgrade their ship between runs, and there’s not much else to say about it. The game is dull, repetitive, unimaginative, and doesn’t even provide enough upgrade options for that part of the game to be engaging. It’s not without its laid-back charm, but you have far better options on the Nintendo Switch.
