Review:
Gekido: Kintaro’s Revenge is an Arcade Brawler that is an upgraded port of the Game Boy Advance game of the same name, which itself was the second game in the series. This is a game that combines gameplay from games like Streets of Rage with nonlinear level design and exploration.
I’m just going to cut to the chase and tell you right now, this is a terrible game. The action is mediocre, the “nonlinear level design” stuff just means you’re going back and forth over the same area, often unsure where to go, there are terrible platforming sections, the game has a terrible story that’s constantly shoved down your throat… yeah, this was just an all-around bad experience.
I can at least give the makers of this game credit in adding features that weren’t present in the GBA version of the game, such as a 2-player co-op mode, but when testing this game with a second player, it just meant we were even more frequently frustrated when one of us bumped into something that triggered slow text to appear on the screen or an inexplicably long load time to get to a new area.
At the very least, the game’s pixel art and animation is decent, though it’s nothing extraordinary.
I’m not going to mince words, I hated this game. It took a mediocre arcade brawler and loaded it up with all sorts of hassles and frustrations. There are plenty of other games in this genre on the Switch worth your time. Don’t bother with this one.
tl;dr – Gekido: Kintaro’s Revenge is an updated port of a GBA Arcade Brawler that suffers from mediocre gameplay topped with a wealth of problems and frustrations. Even a decent presentation doesn’t stop this from being a terrible game.
