Review:

Ghoulboy is an Action-Platformer inspired by 8- and 16-bit games of old, although it doesn’t quite feel like any of them in particular, although it has a motif that leans in the direction of Castlevania and Ghosts ‘N Goblins.

Visually, the game looks like it would have been a decent old-school game were it released all those years ago, with bright colors on dark backgrounds that make for an appealing look and a good contrast that works well for the gameplay. There’s nothing that truly stands out about the visual design, but it all works well enough.

As for the gameplay, the game starts you off with a tiny sword and a few spare sub-weapons, and if it was left at that, I think I would have quickly lost interest, but thankfully you get a longer sword not too far into the game, and at that point this becomes a pretty decent Action-Platformer, with occasional puzzles, often incorporating the spear sub-weapon to use as a platform.

It all works pretty well, although it’s not without its flaws. First, the gameplay can feel a bit basic at times – you have a limited set of abilities, which in turn makes the gameplay feel repetitive at times. The level design, also, can feel pretty repetitive.

However, while Ghoulboy can get repetitive at times, and doesn’t do much that’s truly original, what’s here is still quality gameplay that does a good job of representing the genre. Fans of this sort of game will find Ghoulboy to be a solid addition to their collection.

tl;dr – Ghoulboy is an Action-Platformer with an old-school aesthetic and sensibilities. It can be repetitive at times, and doesn’t do anything especially new or inventive for the genre, but the gameplay is solid and fans of this sort of game should find it to be worth a try.
