Review:
Gigantic Army is an Action-Platformer that has you piloting a mech in a war with mechanized alien forces, with gameplay that feels somewhat reminiscent of Arcade games of old.
Visually, this game looks good, and does a decent job of driving home that nostalgic feel with its detailed characters, especially when you get to massive, screen-filling bosses. This is backed by a soundtrack that does a decent job underscoring the action, but is completely forgettable.
The gameplay itself is good, save for one issue that I’ll get to in a moment. There’s good pacing, a decent variety of enemies, and the bosses in particular deserve credit for being creative, though I will say they’re not very challenging. In fact, overall this game isn’t terribly challenging.
However, that’s not the biggest problem here’ The big problem with Gigantic Army is the way aiming works. Players can aim using the left stick as they move, or they can use the right stick like in a two-stick shooter… however, the fact that both of these control setups are active at the same time means that those using the right stick will find they’re fighting with themselves as they move around and try to aim independently.
Okay, so just use the left stick then, yes? Well, there’s a problem there too. This game actually has the turret of the mech moving to where you’re aiming, and it takes a moment to do so. This means that aiming anywhere is sluggish, which gets really annoying when you want to shoot someone now and the damn turret is taking its time getting to where you’re trying to aim. This ends up causing the whole game to be a frustrating ordeal of working around its terrible controls, which is something you never want in a fast-paced action game.
Oh, and I suppose there is one other complaint I have – this game really wants you to read through its terrible, text-heavy story. It just rambles on and on and on, and trust me when I say that it ain’t Shakespeare. Thank heavens for the “skip” button.
Gigantic Army had some potential to be a solid Action-Platformer. The action here is good, when you’re not distracted by the terrible controls. But those controls, as well as the overall low difficulty, make for an experience that simply isn’t satisfying, which is a shame because it really feels like this game had the potential to be more than it is.
tl;dr – Gigantic Army is an Action-Platformer where you gun through hordes of mechanized aliens using a mech. There’s some good action here, but it’s crippled by terrible controls and an overall low difficulty level. This game had potential to be more, but as-is, it’s disappointing.
