Review:
Glass Masquerade Double Pack is a Compilation of Glass Masquerade, released on the Nintendo Switch in 2019, and Glass Masquerade 2: Illusions, released on the Nintendo Switch in 2020, with this Double Pack coming out on the Nintendo Switch a few months after the second game in 2020.
Before proceeding, I should mention that the first Glass Masquerade is also included in Indie Puzzle Bundle Vol. 1, along with Letter Quest Remastered, Pipe Push Paradise, and Slayaway Camp: Butcher’s Cut, so if you think you might prefer a bundle with more variety, you may want to consider that one.
Here is what I thought of each game in this collection:
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glass Masquerade | Puzzle | 1 | C- |
tl;drGlass Masquerade is a puzzle game that has you piecing together absolutely gorgeous stained glass clock faces much like you would work on a jigsaw puzzle. Unfortunately the controls are absolutely atrocious and ruin the whole experience. | |||
| Glass Masquerade 2: Illusions | Puzzle | 1 | D+ |
tl;drGlass Masquerade 2, like its predecessor, is a Puzzle game that has you piecing together gorgeous stained glass artwork like a jigsaw puzzle. Unfortunately, like the first game, the controls are absolutely atrocious and ruin the whole experience, and this game makes things worse with dark and complex visuals that make the puzzles harder to see, and inane “story” that slows down the gameplay. Do not play this game unless you absolutely loved the first one and are desperate for more. | |||
I really want to like these games, I feel like they have so much potential, but the first game let me down with its terrible control issues, and the second game let me down even further by doing nothing to fix these control issues and making the game even worse by adding on more problems. And it’s really frustrating because I see a lot of good in both of these games if these problems actually got addressed, but sadly that just didn’t happen here.
What’s more, as a bundle, this package only saves players $2 on the $24 price of buying these games individually, and given that the issues with these games will likely make them a “love it or hate it” experience, that’s not much of a motivation to commit to buying both of them at once.
In the end, I can’t give the Glass Masquerade games the recommendation I’d like to, and I definitely can’t recommend the Glass Masquerade Double Pack. While these games have some strong positive qualities, their flaws are too severe to overlook, and this package does little to add value to the prospect of buying both of them together. Skip it.
tl;dr – Glass Masquerade Double Pack combines the two Glass Masquerade Puzzle games into one package, but does little to make buying them together all that worthwhile, especially given the major control issues both of these games have. It’s a shame too, because the presentation of the puzzles is excellent. However, if you’re curious to try them, you’re definitely better off just getting the first game on its own to try it, or snagging it in Indie Puzzle Bundle Vol. 1. Don’t bother with this bundle.
Grade: D+
