Review:
Goblin Sword is a family-friendly Platformer originally released on mobile devices in 2014 and ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2020. Players take the role of a hero on a quest to fight an evil wizard who is using a sword to take over the world.
Yeah, this game isn’t going to win any points on originality. The presentation here uses decent but unspectacular 16-bit-style pixel art visuals and a repetitive soundtrack of a style that’s the sort of thing you’d expect from this sort of game. It’s colorful and appealing, but absolutely nothing memorable.
Likewise, the gameplay here does nothing especially noteworthy or memorable. Yet, despite the complete lack of originality here, it’s hard not to like Goblin Sword. The mechanics are good and work well, the level design is solid with a lot of secrets, there’s good game progression in being able to use your discovered treasures to buy new weapons and equipment. And for a mere $5, there’s a surprising amount of length in the game’s campaign.
If you’re looking for anything interesting, novel, or new, you won’t find it in Goblin Sword. However, if you’re looking for a solid old-school Platformer that’ll give you good bang for your buck, this game will likely be well worth the inexpensive purchase. Fans of the genre should definitely give it a look.
tl;dr – Goblin Sword is an old-school family-friendly Platformer that’s completely lacking in originality, but it makes up for this with good mechanics, good level design, and good value. This game doesn’t push any boundaries or do anything especially noteworthy for the genre, but for a mere $5 it’s a solid purchase for fans of the genre.
