Review:
Goetia is a Graphic Adventure where you play the spirit of a young girl as she explores her estate trying to discover what became of her family.
Given the run-down Gothic look of the setting and the ghostly theme of the game, there’s definitely a creepy atmosphere that permeates Goetia, though that atmosphere doesn’t quite reach the level of horror, I could certainly see some calling this a “horror” game.
The game’s visuals and sound mesh well with the theme, but they’re also largely static. The game has you reading a lot of text, and the house seems largely abandoned save for occasional run-ins with its otherworldly spooky elements, making the game quiet and contemplative… although that occasionally dips into tedious or frustrating thanks to the puzzles.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, the puzzles in this game are very good, making you explore the mansion for clues, trying to decipher the meaning of strange and cryptic hints, and even using a few ghostly abilities like the ability to possess objects, but often it will be unclear just what you need to do or how to go about it. This is definitely a game for those who prefer a good puzzle or those who don’t mind using a walkthrough when they get stuck. It also bears mention that between the reading and puzzles, this game maintains a slow pace that may discourage some players.
If you want a dark, brooding, and largely quiet game with fiendish puzzles and a macabre theme, Goetia might be right up your alley. Just be aware that this game isn’t for everyone.
tl;dr – Goetia is a Graphic Adventure that places you in the role of a young girl’s ghost searching her estate for answers about what happened to her family. It’s got some good atmosphere, but it’s got a slow pace with a lot of quiet reading and frustrating puzzles that might turn off some players.
