Review:
GoFishing 3D is a Fishing game originally released on mobile devices in 2017 and ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2019. And it technically functions without crashing. That is about everything I can say about it that isn’t negative.
Oh wow, where to even begin with this game…
Well, to start, the graphics here have to be some of the worst I have seen in any game on the Nintendo Switch. While I suppose there’s nothing wrong with the overall resolution or framerates, there’s something wrong with just about everything else. Nightmarishly ugly character models for your fisherman/woman, both inexplicably wearing a camo tee shirt with a very, very low-resolution texture. Low-resolution textures are all over the place too – in the environments, in the fish themselves, in the reflections in the water… plus, everything is rendered with really low-poly 3D graphics with terrible aliasing. The environments are extremely sparse, yet despite this the game has atrocious pop-in for environmental features that are literally a few feet away from your character, and laughably bad animations for any time you cast your rod. Oh, and don’t expect any nice environmental noises or music, either.
Of course, I’m getting ahead of myself, because the game reveals how terrible it is right from its menu screen, which is confusingly laid out (and for some reason features the grotesque character models as if anyone wants to see that). You’re given the option to turn on or off rumble and gyroscopic motion control, but even with the motion controls on, I wasn’t able to detect any difference in the gameplay. For those wondering, there’s no touchscreen support either, which seems strange for a game that is so obviously a mobile port.
Okay, but are the mechanics of actual fishing fun? Well, no, not really.
The game’s mechanics aren’t very well explained, but once you know what to do it’s not terribly difficult, although moving your character around (using only the left stick, oddly) is really clunky and awkward. However, the general lack of challenge leads to a lot of boredom and repetition. And just the act of catching a fish once it bites simply isn’t engaging in any way.
GoFishing3D is priced at $15 normally, but regularly drops to $1.50 on the eShop during sales. However, even at that low price this game simply isn’t worth it. Again, it technically works, but it is an ugly, joyless, ugly, ugly experience all-around and I cannot recommend it to anyone. If you want a Fishing game on the Nintendo Switch, you have better options than this. Do not buy this game.
tl;dr – GoFishing3D is a Fishing game that is one of the ugliest games I have ever seen running on the Nintendo Switch. However, even beyond the terrible presentation is the game’s joyless, repetitive, simple gameplay. There is no reason to buy this game no matter how low its sale price is, and those looking for a fun Fishing game on the Nintendo Switch are highly encouraged to look elsewhere.
