Review:

Golf Story is a 2D golf game, and like most games in this vein, it follows the usual formula of “tap the button on the bat in two places at just the right time”. I don’t know why or when golf games settled on this formula, but apparently that is the way the golf gods deem it to be. However, Golf Story isn’t satisfied with leaving it just at that.

Rather than being a straightforward golfing game, Golf Story has RPG elements and even a narrative about a kid trying to prove himself, shady club leadership, and increasingly bizarre golf courses. You’ll often find yourself completing specific objectives that range anywhere from “hit the targets” to “hit food into fishes’ mouths”, and even “play a few rounds of disc golf”.

Now, nearly everything still runs on the core gameplay of the standard golf game, but shaking things up like this and adding an interesting story do a great deal to shake up a tired and worn formula.

The graphics are endearing but nothing special, and the music is nice but not memorable. Really, the best thing about the presentation here are the sound effects, which are excellent, and the surprisingly fun story the game has.

In the end, Golf Story takes an age-old formula for how to make a 2D golf game and gives it enough of an interesting spin to make it into something worth checking out. Er… if you like golf, that is.

tl;dr – Golf Story is a golf game with RPG elements, a narrative story, and plenty of little diversions and golf-related challenges on the way. At its core it’s the same golf formula we’ve seen for decades, but adds enough on top of that to make it worthwhile for anyone interested in the genre

Grade: B+
