Review:
Good Night, Knight, released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2021, is a Top-Down Action-RPG with Roguelike elements that has players taking the role of a knight on an odd journey to repair a tower and try to figure out why he fell off the tower in the first place.
Probably this game’s best trait is its excellent sense of humor, delightfully skewering common tropes of the fantasy-RPG genre. The journey begins with the titular knight letting us know that our story begins with his tale’s end, as he dies falling from a tower… only he doesn’t, and the rubble from his fall interrupts a hero about to be sent on a holy quest. Naturally, the official quest-giver decides to send you on a quest instead.
While the game’s humor is excellent, the rest of the presentation is nothing special, using pixel art visuals with poor animation (characters move by having their still image bounce around) and a forgettable synthesized soundtrack. The game’s humor is pretty much carrying this game’s presentation.
When it comes to the gameplay, this is a game that attempts to do a lot of things, but does none of them especially well. There’s a stealth system, but not a very well-crafted or engaging one. Combat is mind-numbingly simple, there’s a crafting system that feels uninspired. Carrying items seems needlessly over-complicated. Rogue”lite” progression here is slow. At the very least I think it clever that the game levels up your equipment to decrease its weight so you can gradually carry more as you go through the game, but for the most part the gameplay here just isn’t very engaging.
Even though I’m not super-enthusiastic about Good Night, Knight, I still commend it for trying to do a few interesting things with its equipment leveling and I think it has a great sense of humor. There are absolutely elements of a great game here, but far too few to make for anything truly noteworthy here.
tl;dr – Good Night, Knight is a Top-Down Action-RPG with Roguelike elements. It has a fantastic sense of humor and some interesting equipment leveling elements, but for the most part this game’s presentation and gameplay just falls flat. While not terrible, I can’t give it a high recommendation.
