Review:

Gradiently, released on the Nintendo Switch in 2021, is a family-friendly Puzzle game of sorts where players must sort a grid of colored squares so that they form a gradient, with each square gradually progressing from one shade to the next, corner-to-corner.

The presentation in Gradiently is pretty much just… well, colored squares. They’re lovely colors, but this is hardly a presentation. The gameplay is accompanied by an upbeat tune that I didn’t especially like and found a bit annoying.

As for the gameplay… honestly, I kinda’ hesitate to even call this a Puzzle game. It’s sorting busywork, and doesn’t really take any brainpower. Early levels are barely a challenge, and later levels are only as challenging as your ability (or lack thereof) to discern different shades and tones of colors and place them in an order. Still, I can see how this sort of exercise can at least be relaxing, even if it isn’t especially compelling.

One other thing I’ll note here – while the gamepad controls here work fine, this game is best played using the touchscreen, which makes dragging and dropping squares to swap them a breeze.

In the end I suppose that if a game that’s less of a puzzle and more of a simple task of sorting colors is something that sounds appealing to you, Gradiently is… well, that. However, players wanting something a bit more involved may want to skip this one.

tl;dr – Gradiently is a family-friendly Puzzle game that has players sorting colored squares to create a gradient. This is almost less of a game and more of a simple task of sorting, and players looking for a compelling Puzzle game won’t find it here. However, if you’re looking for simple, easygoing busywork as a time-waster, Gradiently is decent enough at that.
