Review:

Guess the Character is a Board Game that, to no one’s surprise, plays like Guess Who. As in, this is basically a knock-off version of Guess Who. That being said, I’m of the opinion that there’s nothing wrong with a knock-off so long as it’s a good knock-off, so the question then becomes, is Guess the Character a good knock-off?

Players are offered multiple character sets to choose from ranging from cartoon depictions of normal-looking people to cartoon depictions of movie monsters or cavemen. These characters are randomized and placed on your screen like tiles on a grid. Players then select one of these characters and take turns asking questions about character traits and using that to narrow down which character the other player selected.

Ah, but how exactly do you do the “asking questions” bit of Guess Who in a videogame? Well, in this case, players are given a list of under 30 pre-selected questions to choose from. As you might imagine, this eliminates any potential for players to come up with a clever or funny question, and 30 questions doesn’t really give you many choices, especially when many questions are basically asking the same thing (“Are they X?” and “Are they not X?” are functionally identical questions for a game like this).

As if that wasn’t bad enough, the game automates the removal of eliminated characters. In short, players have little control over pretty much any facet of the game that makes this game actually interesting.

It’s not like Guess Who is a spectacular game to begin with, but Guess the Character fails to even accomplish that level of gameplay, removing a lot of player choice and interaction that was present in the physical board game. Players looking for something to play with a very, very, very young child might find this to be a nice brief distraction, but practically everyone, even those who enjoy Guess Who, will quickly lose interest in Guess the Character.

tl;dr – Guess the Character is a Board Game that plays like a knock-off version of Guess Who. However, players don’t get to choose their questions, and elimination of characters is automatic, removing the majority of choice and interaction the original game had. The result is a boring, pointless game.
