Review:
Guess the Word is an Educational game released on Nintendo Switch in 2019. This game, seemingly designed for very young children, has players moving letters using the touchscreen to spell out a word that the character on-screen is drawing. This game is not playable using traditional gamepad controls.
The presentation here is pretty abysmal, featuring an ugly cartoony character with extremely simple animation who annoyingly says “yeah” and “great” when you complete a word, backed by a simple repetitive instrumental soundtrack. Parents, be warned, if you get your kid this game, the annoying, repetitive sound will drive you up the wall.
A timer ticks down as you try to piece together each word, but nothing seems to happen if you let it expire – you can’t actually lose. What’s more, the game doesn’t seem to keep score – you get a 1-3 star rating after plunking in a series of these words, but it’s not really indicated what determines this rating. And the words themselves are all fairly simple, ranging from “dog”, “cat”, and “car” to “trumpet”.
That’s… pretty much it. There’s not really anything here in the way of options or variety. Just an endless bunch of simple words you piece together followed by “yeah” and “great”. Do yourself a favor if you’re considering getting this game… don’t. Get some flash cards instead. They’ll be less annoying, more educational, and probably more fun.
tl;dr – Guess the Word is an Educational game for young children where players use the touchscreen to piece together simple words. The gameplay is brain-dead simple, there’s nothing in the way of options, the sound is annoying, the visuals are ugly, and you can’t even play the game in docked mode. Don’t waste your money on this.
