Review:
Gurgamoth is an Arcade-style Party Game where players take the role of a color-coded cultist floating in a ring with three others, trying to bash them into walls and obstacles with the goal of being the last remaining survivor three times, awakening the titular elder god Gurgamoth. This game was released on PC in 2016 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2019.
The presentation here is decent, featuring hand-drawn characters, obstacles, and backgrounds, and an energetic but forgettable soundtrack. There’s nothing especially noteworthy or memorable going on here, but it suits the game well enough.
When it comes to the gameplay, Gurgamoth basically plays like a glorified bumper car match, with players trying to bash each other into hazards strewn around the arena. This would be a decent concept for an Arcade-style Party game, but it’s unfortunately marred by extremely loose and floaty controls that make it difficult to move your character even when they’re not being bashed into.
If it weren’t for the loose, unwieldy controls, Gurgamoth could have been a decent but simple Arcade-Style Party game. Unfortunately, as-is it’s a game that’s more frustrating than fun. There are other, better Party games on the Switch that are more worth your time and money.
tl;dr – Gurgamoth is an Arcade-Style Party Game that has players as cultists bumping each other into hazards to please a grotesque elder god. It’s a simple game that could have been a fun take on a “bumper cars”-style formula, but loose and unwieldy controls make it hard to enjoy.
