Review:
Hatsune Miku Logic Paint is a Picross Puzzle game originally released on mobile devices in 2020 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2021 in a much-expanded S version of the game that adds extra puzzles (reaching a total of 350) and an improved presentation. As the name implies, this game features characters and music from the Hatsune Miku franchise.
With this being the case, Hatsune Miku Logic Paint S ends up being a game with one of the best presentations I’ve seen for a Picross game. The game has an abundance of 2D character art, with chibi-ified versions of the characters in menus, and more detailed art unlockable in a gallery for completing puzzles. In addition, the game has a selection of Hatsune Miku music in that sort of heavily-synthesized “vocaloid” J-Pop style that the franchise is known for, as well as some instrumental versions of those themes. The entire game comes across as bright and colorful and bubbly, and it’s overall a great use of the license.
The game itself works well enough as a Picross game, but I can’t help but feel like it’s lacking numerous options. There’s no touchscreen support, there’s no ability to have the game’s songs playing on shuffle, and the text-only tutorial here is pretty lacking for younger players who may be attracted to the game by the colorful characters. It also has no multiplayer support, something that’s nice to have in these games.
Still, overall, this works well enough for a Picross game, and the presentation is very good. Fans of Hatsune Miku who already know how to play Picross will find this to be a wonderful blend of the two, and those who aren’t as well-acquainted with one or the other may still find this one of the more enjoyable Picross games on the Nintendo Switch, as long as they don’t mind its flaws.
tl;dr – Hatsune Miku Logic Paint S takes the popular “vocaloid” characters and their highly-synthesized J-Pop music and brings them to the Picross genre in a game that has a great presentation, but is somewhat lacking in its features. Still, fans of both Picross and Hatsune Miku will likely find this to be a solid pairing of the two.
