Review:

Hentai Uni is a Puzzle Game released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2022. And as the title indicates, yes, this is also an “ecchi” game featuring art of attractive anime-style girls (dressed in military, police, and doctor’s outfits, which I suppose bears some loose relevance to the game’s title?), with said girls wearing increasingly revealing outfits and depicted in cheesecake poses, and at times the game even features full frontal nudity, glistening body fluids and all. Anyway, beyond the titillation, in this game players swap tiles in a puzzle to piece together the image of said girl in order to progress and see more images.

Okay, as I’ve said before, I’m not a big fan of ecchi games, but I’m not necessarily opposed to them either, as long as they’re a decent game and as long as the sexy stuff works for the game. When it comes to Hentai Uni, I suppose the sexy stuff does work well for the game… but only because that’s pretty much all there is to this game.

To be fair, the anime-style artworks this game presents are nice, and the girls depicted do look attractive, although of course not everyone is going to find dripping-wet nether-regions attractive. This artwork is backed by calm, relaxing music that I suppose is conducive for the sort of mood this game is trying to create. Unfortunately, this low bar for presentation is quickly undone by the fact that anyone reading this review can easily find countless images of similar or better quality in a quick web search, and since there’s no animation, no character, and no real niche this game fills, and since its art is at times somewhat obscured by animated rays of sunlight in most pictures, its potential for titillation seems highly limited.

This is made worse by just how limited this game is – it features only 12 unique artworks, as well as 3-5 variations of each of those works (varying states of undress for the girl depicted in said artwork). Players looking to actually play this game and not pause a lot to… er… “admire” the artwork… will find this game can be completed within 30 minutes, easily.

Of course, that gets me to the actual gameplay, if you can even call it that. There are children’s games with more complex gameplay – all you’re doing is swapping squares to try to piece together the artwork. There’s no nuance, no skill involved, not even a timer. This doesn’t even have the complexity of a jigsaw puzzle, because jigsaw puzzles usually have far more pieces, as well as irregular shapes. You just swap any two squares, and then keep doing that until the pieces are all in the right place.

Even this stupidly simple gameplay is something Hentai Uni gets wrong too. The game keeps placing your cursor back on the first spot you selected when selecting a pair of spaces, making for completely unnecessary disorientation. This disorientation would be resolved if the game supported the touchscreen, since this sort of gameplay seems ideally-suited for that… but of course, this game doesn’t support the touchscreen.

Hentai Uni isn’t a mess of a game like many ecchi games are, but that’s only because it’s barely a game at all. There’s no challenge to its puzzles, no enjoyment to be found in its gameplay, and while the sexy artwork is decent, if that’s the reason you’re interested in this game, you’re far better off looking for your sexy art on this newfangled thing called “the internet”. So if you shouldn’t get this game for its gameplay and you shouldn’t get this game for its sexy content… exactly what is there left here to bother with?

tl;dr – Hentai Uni is nominally a Puzzle Game, and as the title makes clear this is also an ecchi game with artwork of scantily-clad and topless girls in compromising poses. Unfortunately, the tile-swapping gameplay is more brain-dead than a children’s game, and while the artwork is nice, it’s nothing interesting enough to sit through this boring gameplay just so you can ogle it. Trust me, if you want porn, just look for porn. If you want an actual game, get something else.
