Review:
Hidden is a Horror game that is so clearly trying to be a cheap knockoff of Outlast that I have to imagine their only standards for this game were:
- Do that thing that Outlast does.
- Be less expensive than Outlast. I mean, don’t go too low, but at the very least undercut their price so people can at least think they’re getting a deal with this game.
- Don’t worry about quality. Where we’re going, we don’t need quality.
Well, let’s run down the checklist here… okay, number one, “be like Outlast”. Takes place in an asylum? Check. First-person view? Check. You’re running around looking for keys and stuff? Check. You can’t attack enemies, and are forced to hide from them? Check. Hey look, boys! We made us an Outlast!
Okay, number two, be less expensive than Outlast. Well, Outlast is selling for $25, but it also comes with an expansion, so…. let’s say we’ll sell our game for $10? That way, we can sell people on the idea that we’re offering the same basic experience as Outlast, but for less than half the price! I mean, it’s still not a good deal considering how little effort we actually put into the game, but people can think it’s a good deal, and that’s the important thing.
On that note, number three, don’t worry about quality. Check, check, double-check. This game’s framerates are so bad, it’s a friggin’ slide show… but let’s just not put video of the game on Nintendo’s website. The whole thing just screams “cheap”, and despite the shoddy graphics, it’s still going to take up a few gigs of space on your memory card. The level design is nowhere near as detailed or nuanced as Outlast, there aren’t any clever mechanics… we’re not even gonna’ have an actual story in this thing! Oh, and certainly we’re not going to bother actually making the thing, you know, scary.
Yup, that’s a surefire recipe for success, right? After all, Outlast became a cult hit, so surely a game that’s nominally like Outlast, but a sloppy, lazy, broken, uninspired knockoff will be nearly as good, right?
If this game still sounds like it’s worth your time… well, there’s not much I can say to dissuade you. Otherwise, take my advice and stay far, far away from Hidden. The only thing scary about this game is how a game this bad got on the eShop in the first place.
tl;dr – Hidden is a First-Person Horror game that is a cheap knockoff of Outlast, and by “cheap”, I mean “absolutely terrible with no redeeming value”.
