Review:
High Noon Revolver, released on PC in 2017 and Nintendo Switch in 2019, is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer with elements of Auto-Runners and Roguelikes. Players choose a Western-themed hero and trek through hordes of enemies while jumping between three levels of platforms.
The presentation here is good, featuring colorful, appealing pixel art 2D visuals, and a synthesized Western-ish soundtrack that’s nothing special but fits the game well enough. There’s nothing here that truly stands out, but it’s appealing and works well for the gameplay.
As for that gameplay, players will be moving their character freely throughout auto-scrolling levels, taking out enemies as they go and occasionally spending gold they pick up to purchase Roguelike-style upgrades for their character. It’s a simple premise, but the gameplay moves at a steady pace and there’s a good enough variety of enemies to keep things interesting.
The unfortunate downside is that, at least with characters you have access to early in the game, both your movement speed and firing speed is particularly sluggish, often making it feel like taking damage wasn’t due to your own fault, but due to your character being unable to keep pace with you. Also, the unlock progression to get new characters is pretty slow too.
Still, while it has its issues, High Noon Revolver is a decent Arcade-like experience for $3. Players who can get used to its characters’ limitations will find this to be a simple but fun experience that does a good job giving you that “just one more try” sort of feeling you look for in a game like this. Given the low price, I’d say this is probably worth getting if the premise interests you.
tl;dr – High Noon Revolver is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer with Auto-Runner and Roguelike elements and a Wild West theme. The characters and their firing rate are both sluggish, and so too is the frequency with which you unlock new characters. However, for a mere $3, this is worth a look if the premise sounds interesting to you.
