Review:

Home Escape is an odd game that has you using motion controls to tug on a rope to lift a depressed child up to free him from an abusive home. So… yeah, this game is strange, and it clearly deals with themes that might be an emotional trigger for some people.

The presentation here is amateurish and simple in an ugly sorta’ way that’s likely intentional. Given the topic matter, I suppose that makes sense, but it doesn’t make this game much more appealing. This is a messy, ugly game about an ugly topic, and while some people might appreciate that, I can’t say that I cared for it.

As for the gameplay, this is a pretty simple, arcadey sorta’ game. Players are tasked with using the motion controls to tug on a rope (as an aside, I’m not sure how this is meant to help the kid you’re tugging into the air, but this game isn’t overly concerned with logic). As you progress into the game, this task is balanced with other tasks, such as angry cats you need to swat away. This ultimately works out to feel like players are being made to follow a set of instructions more than actually playing a game. Do X until Y happens, and then do Z until you can go back to doing X. This is not fun. It’s just going through the motions.

I recognize that much of Home Escape just may not appeal to me. It’s unique, it tackles a difficult topic (though not in a way I liked), and it tries something a bit different with its motion controls. However, it’s also ugly, repetitive, doesn’t really have anything I feel is especially compelling. If you’re not put off by the presentation or topic matter and don’t mind dropping a few bucks on something that’s very different, you might find Home Escape to be an interesting distraction. But most players are better off not bothering with this game.

tl;dr – Home Escape is an odd game that has you using motion controls to “save” an abused child by tugging him into the air using a rope. No, it doesn’t make much sense. It’s also ugly, and has fairly simple and repetitive gameplay. However, I give it points for being unique, at least.
